    Read Creating America  pg 396-402
       and from Book 5   pg 69-77
    HO-  questions about the Gold Rush
          Answer on notebook paper
          Give complete answers
          #6 must have 8 different uses of gold
                (jewelry is one answer)
    HW- this assignment is due tomorrow

    -State Reading test - this week

    -Continue to practice your song parody
       pairs will begin to present this Wednesday

    -Bring ideas to skim and scan after testing
       these ideas are for a topic that you would
       like to research and find out more.

Social Studies:

    -turn in the 10 Strip extra credit assignment today

    -CW- read from Creating America  pg 374-385
       "Manifest Destiny" for many groups

    -Map work - study and put on your map in the
       correct locations the following trails:
       1.  Oregon Trail
       2. Santa Fe
       3.  Chisholm
       4.  Mormon
       5.  California
   
       *put on the forts for extra credit
       keep your work neat and correct
    -Completed maps are due tomorrow  (3-18)

       add notes to your glossary pages

    Maps - continue work with stats of animals and tribes
       -maps turned in on Friday (3-14) will get extra credit points

    CW -  work on maps and "Then and Now" stats
       -maps turned in on Friday =  grade +  extra credit
       -maps due on Monday=  grade

    -each partner compose two verses

    -look at song parodies and samples
    -Songs and topics will be assigned by
       Wednesday if your group is still searching


Social Studies:

    Lewis and Clark - map
       -place icons of the animals and tribes
          on the map
       -have the correct numbers to place with
            the icons  (Now and Then ws)
       -see overhead (classroom for explanation)
    Wednesday - will be a work day - bring all your materials
       Completed map due Monday - (3-17)
          Friday - early maps will earn extra credit  (3-14)

Printed grades handed out today - get parent's signature and return to me for extra credit points

Language Arts:


    Review parody -
       view "Like a Surgeon" by Wierd Al
       get song approved
       get parody topic approved
       start composing 12 lines minimum
          -make lyrics high level satire/vocabulary

Social Studies:


    Review:  Group reponse assessment
          discuss answers and logic
          hand back papers - keep all L & C papers for now
          bring map to class tomorrow for stats
             (map should be finished as noted last week)
    Make up work will be available this week (Wednesday)

NO SCHOOL ON FRIDAY - TEACHERS GRADING and STAFF DEVELOPMENT DAY

LANGUAGE ARTS:

    CW- correct "Quotations Marks II & III"
       -turn in work

    Pairs - continue to tape "Casey at the Bat"

    Parody- examples in music
       -2-3 students can work together to write and
       perform a musical parody
       -start looking for a melody that is easy to
       sing and has the energy needed for a parody
       -get song approved then plan your topic for
       the lyrics.  This topic must be approved before
       writing the lyrics.
       -come Monday with basic research done and
       ready to get approval

SOCIAL STUDIES:


    Groups meet and work through "Then and Now"
       assessment - pool your research and brains
    CW - H.O. with prompts for groups to answer
       -use your research notes and background reading
       to help the group create an answer.
       -all papers are due at the end of the class.

              Enjoy your three day break !

    Library and computers- introduce three new sites
       -see the new links at the left:
          1.  Animal Diversity
          2.  Census2000-Tribes
          3.  Deforestation-Gloobal
          4.  Forests-Greenpeace
          5.  Primary Forests

    CW/HW:  last day for work on research and notes
       -work is due tomorrow  (groups will meet at beginning
             of class)

Read Across America Day

Language Arts:

    Turn in essay with the comic strip

    Read aloud  "Casey At The Bat" 
       Discuss the energy and vocabulary
       Mock epic and the hero
    -pairs will practice a verse
    -add appropriate sound effects
    -record the poem tomorrow


Social Studies:

    Discussion:  The Buffalo Hunt

    ws "Then and Now"  groups assign categories
       - take one animal/plant species and one tribe
       -divide up all the others on the ws per group
       -read and record information for your group
       -notes/statistics are due this Wednesday

   Test makeup -  tomorrow during class
       (for those who were absent last Thursday)
       Strip list 10 quiz -
